Notes  and Tips

Helpful to read these before starting and maybe even again when it’s time to put your softie

together

~Do not join pieces that are crocheted in the round unless otherwise indicated.

~Pieces are crocheted in the round unless otherwise indicated for that particular piece.

~A stitch marker will come in handy when repeating rounds or another helpful way to keep track of your

rounds is to, start all pieces with a long tail, pull the tail through the beginning stitch of each round.

~Use a tiny piece of felt under eyes to help them stand out. Cut two small circles (tracing around a button, just

slightly bigger than your eyes will help make a nice circle). Cut a small slit in the center of the circle, insert eye

stem and attach to head. Remember not to close the bottom of the head until you have secured safety eye

fasteners.

~Some pieces are small, so it’s a good idea to weave in your beginning yarn tail after a few rounds.

Cut a black piece of yarn about 8 inches long wrap around center of body 2-3 times, tie tight knot at

top, cut, leaving about 1 inch for antennas.

Sew butterfly to hat, making sure to leave wings un-sewn so that they can be bent upwards.

~It is helpful to separate yarn into two plies when sewing on small parts like nose and ears.

~Assembling face: Crochet, head, nose, ears, beard and mustache pieces first. Stuff head, do not close. Decide

where you want your gnomes eyes (sample gnome’s eyes are 11 rows up from bottom of head with 5-6 single

crochet stitches between them. Once you have decided where your eyes should be (lay the beard and mustache

pieces on the bottom of the face to help you decide where eyes look best), remove stuffing, secure eyes and restuff. Close bottom of head by threading tapestry needle with ending yarn tail, weave through remaining

unworked stitches, pull tight to gather and close. After eyes are secure, sew top of beard to face (leaving bottom

and sides of beard un-sewn). Sample gnome’s beard is two rounds down from bottom of eyes. Sew center of

mustache (leaving sides, top and bottom un-sewn), directly over beard so that the top of the mustache is just

over the top of the beard. Sew nose (using tiny whip stitches) in center of mustache so that the top of the nose

is just over the top of the mustache. Be sure to refer to pictures for additional placement help. Next add eyelids.

To sew and secure eyelids. Thread tapestry needle with one yarn tail. Insert needle as close to inside center top

of eye as possible, bring needle out through bottom of head, and secure yarn (where stitches won’t be seen).

Thread second yarn tail, move eyelid over top of eye, at a slight angle, insert needle back into head coming back

out through bottom. Tug lightly to slightly indent eyelid and secure in place, secure yarn under head. After

pieces have been sewn in place, needle sculpt eyes.

~Needle sculpting will help eyes and cheeks stand out. Thread tapestry needle with two plies of black yarn. Insert needle

under the head where stitches won’t be seen. Secure yarn and bring needle up in a stitch as close to the inside corner of the

right eye as you can (just under eyelid), move needle across eye to outside edge at a slight angle (again just under eyelid),

insert needle and go back down under head, tug gently to slightly indent your eye and hold stitch in place, re-insert the

needle and repeat for the other eye. Secure yarn under head when you are finished. If you are still not sure how needle

sculpting works, be sure to visit my blog for tutorials and additional photos.

~Sew head to top center of body using tiny whip stitches, going around head and through body. You may need to go

around several times to make sure the head is securely attached.

~Attaching Legs and Arms: To attach legs; position near bottom center of body, making sure bottom of leg is even with

bottom of body and that bear would be able to sit on legs and bottom. Thread tapestry needle, holding leg in place, insert

needle about 1 inch down from the top center of the leg. Push needle all the way through to the other side, leaving a long

tail on beginning side. Remove leg, insert needle back into body, bringing needle out the same stitch you started with. Tie

a secure tight knot (will be hidden under leg). Pick up first leg, insert needle under 3 or 4 stitches on inside of leg (about 1

inch down from top in center). Insert needle back into body (near beginning stitch) coming out through other side (near

first stitch), pick up other leg, insert needle under 3 or 4 stitches on inside of leg again, insert needle back into body

coming out under other leg, tug slightly to secure, repeat sewing under leg stitches and go back and forth through body 3

or 4 more times, end on same side as you started, tying another small tight knot, hiding under leg. Attach arms the same

way, note: I think it’s helpful to sew on head first so that you can see where “shoulders” should be.

~Eyebrows and hair: Eyebrows=stitch over 2-3 sc about 1-2 rounds up from his eyelids with Pipsqueak. For your

Hair=cut several pieces of Pipsqueak about 2=3 inches long. After Gnome is assembled and hat is attached, thread

tapestry needle with a piece of pipsqueak, insert under one single crochet stitch close to hat, bring needle back up on other

side of stitch, tie a tight knot in center of yarn and cut to desired length. Repeat for as much hair as you would like.
