Stitches/terms used in this pattern:
(mr) Magic ring
(sc) Single crochet
(inc) Increase – 2sc in same st
(dec) Decrease (invisible) – hook through front loop only
of the next 2 stitches, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn
over and pull through both loops on hook.
Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you
should have at the end of the row/round
Add some festive cheer to the home with a cute
Santa Gonk. You can also make a Gonk for any
occasion just by changing the colours, or even
make a fun hairy Gonk.
This pattern can be made with any yarn size. The
yarn size you choose will determine the size of
your finished Gonk. Keep to the same size yarn for
each colour. As a guide, using DK yarn with 4mm
hook will produce a Gonk approximately 12cm
tall. Using Bulky (UK chunky) yarn and 6mm hook
produces a Gonk approximately 17cm tall with the
point of hat folded over
You will need:
For Santa Gonk: Red, White, Black and
a flesh coloured yarn (less than a ball/
skein of each used)
Toy stuffing (Polyester fibre filling)
Yarn needle
Scissors
For weight pouch (optional):
Approx. 100g of dry rice or poly
pellets
A nylon stocking
Other weights can be used instead.
To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x.
For example; [sc, inc,] would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in next st. Or [sc x3, inc,] would
mean sc each into the next 3 stitches, increase in the next st.
Your Gonk will sit best with a little weight inside. In the pattern, I will give instructions for using a
dry rice or poly pellet pouch make with stockings. You can use other types of weights or omit the
weight completely and just use stuffing if you want to make your Gonk into plushie.
Making the main body:
The main pattern will give instructions for colour changes to make a Santa Gonk, you will need to
join your rounds to keep your colour changes level. At the end of each round, slip stitch into the
first sc to join, start the next round going into the same st you joined into.
If you want to make a single colour Gonk, you can work in continuous rounds and use a stitch
marker after the first stitch to keep track of the beginning of round.
For Santa, start with using Red yarn
R1. Start with a magic ring, sc 6 times into the ring, pull the
ring closed (6)
Remember to join at the end of each round if making Santa
or working different colours on the body piece.
R2. inc x6 (12)
R3. sc, inc, repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)
R4. sc x2, inc, repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)
R5. sc x3, inc, repeat between * a total of 6 times (30)
R6. sc x4, inc, repeat between * a total of 6 times (36)
R7. sc x5, inc, repeat between * a total of 6 times (42)
This completes the base of your Gonk.
Change to White yarn here to make the jacket trim.
R8.-R10. sc in each st (42 for 3 rounds)
Change to Red yarn here
R11.-R14. sc in each st (42 for 4 rounds)
R15. sc x5, dec, repeat between * a total of 6 times (36)
Change to Black yarn here. This will be the belt.
R16.-R17. sc in each st (36 for 2 rounds)
Change back to Red yarn here.
R18.-R19. sc in each st (36 for 2 rounds)
R20. sc x4, dec, repeat between * a total of 6 times (30)
R21.-R23. sc in each st (30 for 3 rounds)
Make and insert your weight pouch here. For best results, fill
a stocking with dry rice or poly pellets to form a ball slightly
larger than the opening on your body piece, tie the stocking
and trim off extra. Place a layer of polyester stuffing in the
base of the piece, insert your weight and fill around the
weight with more stuffing.
R24. sc x3, dec, repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)
R25.-R26. sc in each st (24 for 2 rounds)
R27. sc x2, dec, repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)
R28. sc in each st (18)
Continue filling the body with stuffing.
R29. sc, dec, repeat between * a total of 6 times (12)
Finish stuffing the body.
R30. dec x6 (6)
Fasten off and weave through the last 6 stitches to close the
top.
Making the pointy hat:
Use Red yarn for Santa, you can work the hat in continuous rounds. If you want to make a stripy
hat, join at the end of rounds to keep the stripes level.
R1. Start with a magic ring, sc 4 times into ring, pull the ring closed (4)

R3. sc in each st (6)

for attaching (see hairy Gonk).
Or continue to add a turn up brim, weaving in the ends here.
For a Santa hat, join White yarn to any st here.
R23.-R25. sc in each st (42 for 3 rounds)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching. Fold up the brim
section. For Santa and if desired, attach a small pompom to the
point of the hat. You could add a bell instead, if you like.
Making the nose:
You will need to join at the end of rounds for this piece.
Using a flesh coloured yarn
R1. Start with a magic ring, sc 6 times into ring, pull the ring
closed, sl st to join (6)
R2. sc, inc, repeat between * a total of 3 times, sl st to join (9)
R3. sc x2, inc, repeat between * a total of 3 times, sl st to join
(12)
R4. sc x3, inc, repeat between * a total of 3 times, sl st to join
(15)
R5. sc in each st, sl st to join (15)
R6. sc x3, dec, repeat between * a total of 3 times, sl st to join
(12)
Lightly fill with stuffing here
R7. dec x3, sl st to join (6)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching. Your nose will be a
triangular shape so you will be positioning the nose with one point at the top and the two other
points to the sides.
Attaching the nose and adding the beard:
Place the hat on the body piece without applying pressure to find
the natural sitting position for the hat.
Decide which side you want the front of body to be (if you are
adding a beard it would be good to hide the joining seam under
the beard) and press a small dip upwards into the hat piece in the
central front position.
Thread your yarn needle on to the yarn tail of the nose piece and
position the nose so it sits nicely in the dip. Hold in place and
attach the nose into position (you can now remove the hat to
stitch around the nose).
If you are adding a beard, cut strands of yarn long enough to be
folded in half and reach from the top of nose to base of body.
Start along the top of the nose, place your hook around a
horizontal stitch of the body piece, from the top going down, fold
a cut strand in half and pull through to form a loop on hook, pull
the ends through the loop and pull tight. Repeat this process
along the body stitches all the way around the nose piece. Add
another row under the nose. You can add more wherever
necessary to fill any gaps. Trim the attached strands to form more
of a beard shape. You can leave the beard as straight strands or
unravel the strands to get a fuller, fluffier beard.
Adding the arms:
Make 2 arms as follows. For Santa, start with flesh colour yarn for hands or Black/Red for gloves.

R3. sc in each st, sl st to join (6)
For Santa, change to White yarn here,
R4. sc x2, inc, sl st to join (8)
R5. sc in each st, sl st to join (8)
For Santa, change to Red yarn here,
R6. sc x3, inc, sc x3, inc, sl st to join (10)
R7.-R10. sc in each st, sl st to join (10 for 4
rounds)
R11. sc x3, dec, sc x3, dec, sl st to join (8)
R12. dec x4, sl st to join (4)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching. To find the positioning for the arms, place the hat on the
body again, tuck the top of arms under the brim of hat on either side. Attach to the body by whip
stitching along the top of the arms with the yarn tails.
Attaching the hat:
Place your hat on the body piece and position so that it
wraps snuggly over the nose and covers the top of the
arms. Using your yarn needle and the tail end left on
the hat piece, stitch around the brim of the hat,
attaching to the body piece.
Congratulations!
You have now finished your Christmas Santa Gonk.
Play around with different colour combinations to make
a Gonk for any occasion! How about making a mascot
using team colours?
To make a hairy Gonk:
You will need fur or eyelash style yarn and normal
yarn in a coordinating colour.
Here I have used Luxe Fur by King Cole in Beaver
with UK Chunky acrylic in grey.
Start with your normal yarn only, work up to R7.
of the body piece to create the base joining at the
end of rounds.
Now turn your piece over so that the wrong side
is facing you. Add the fluffy yarn, hold the fur/
eyelash yarn together with the normal yarn and
work both strands together.
You will work the rest of the body so that the right
side is on the inside, keeping the right side of the
base on the underside. This is because the action
of hooking the stitches towards you traps the
fibres and the fluff stays on the wrong side. You
want the wrong side to show on the outside.
