DIFFICULTY
INTERMEDIATE

Materials

  • Any yarn in golden brown, ivory, black, soft pink, white, red, blue, green and yellow colour
  • Crochet hook that matches the size of your yarn
  • A pair of safety eyes and washer (I use oval eyes in 10x8mm)
  • (Optional) A safety nose (I use 10mm, but nose pattern is provided)
  • Tapestry/yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing
  • A hot glue gun

SIZE
I used Bali cotton yarn in size #2 (sport) and a 2.50mm crochet
hook. My Lights Shiba turned out approximately 12cm (3.4″) tall.

ABBREVIATIONS
R = round/row
ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tc = triple crochet
inc = increase (2sc in 1 st)
dec = decrease (sc in 2 st)
BLO = back loop only
FLO = front loop only
sk = skip
slst = slip stitch
x(…) = repeat (…) times

Sealing method
I often use this method to get rid of some tails because it saves
more time than weaving the tails in one by one. However, make
sure the area that you want to “seal” is not visible, thus, not making
it ugly.

  1. Hold the tail to your piece. If you have more than 1 tail, you can
    twist it to become one.
  1. Apply a small amount of hot glue gun, quickly and carefully press
    it using a metal flat object, I’m using my scissors.

Cut off the tail and you’re done

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, or not leaving a tail and just glue them later

Nose (optional)
(black)
I’m using a safety nose and cut the spike on the back of it using cutting pliers. Then, I will glue it to the snout later. If you don’t have safety nose (or can’t find one), you can just crochet it:
Ch 4, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) sc, hdc, sc [3]
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, or not leaving a tail and just glue them later.

Lights
(black, red, yellow, blue, green)
We’re going to make the cable first.
1) ch 7.
2) (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 2slst.
3) Repeat step 1 and 2.
4) Repeat step 1 and 2 six more times, then end with ch 5. Weave in/- seal off the tails.
5) Make 2 lights in each red, yellow, blue and green colour.
Lights pattern: ch 3, (starting from 2nd ch from hook) 2slst. Seal off the tails. (Or you can just make the lights shape out of felt to make it simpler.)
6) Glue the lights to the lights “cap” on the cable that you made earlier. Make sure no same color is placed side by side. Place them on the front and back of the caps by turns (see picture) because we want to make the lights go up and down like on the picture at the very top of the page.

Assembly
I recommend to use ball point pins for assembly. This way will help
you to keep the pieces in place and make it easier to do the sewing.
I’m using a hot glue gun to attach some of the parts, but if you
make this amigurumi for kids, I recommend to make it fully sewn.

  1. Sew the body to the head.
  2. Sew the legs to the body (see pictures).
  1. This step is optional, I inserted a wire through the upper part of the
    body for the arms. (Not recommended if you make this amigurumi for kids)
  2. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body.
  3. Sew the ears on approx. R5-R11 of the head
  1. Sew/glue the ear details on the ears.
  2. Sew the snout on the centre of the face, place the top of the
    snout 1 round above the round that you insert safety eyes. Before fully close the gap, insert little stuffing.
  1. Attach the nose in the middle and upper part of the snout.
  2. Attach the eyebrows approx. 2 round above the eyes, slightly to the centre and forming like angry eyebrows a little.
  3. Sew the tail on the lower back of the body. Using the excess
    yarn, sew the top part of the tail to the body to fix the tail so it will remain curled.
  1. Place the santa hat on the right ear (our POV) and fold the end
    of the santa hat. Then, sew/glue it in place.
  2. Attach the cheeks on both sides of the lower part of the face.
  1. Last but not least, place the lights on one
    side ot the hand, to front side of the body and
    to the other side of the hand (it’s like he’s
    holding it). Then, apply a little hot glue on the
    hands so the lights will stay in place.
    And.. You’re done!
